Overview
The Tahoe Gateway Counties project area includes the
Counties of Sierra,
Nevada,
Placer and
El Dorado and
encompasses approximately 5,500 square miles and nearly 450,000 people. The overall goal
of the Tahoe Gateway Counties Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Strategic
Deployment Plan (SDP) is to develop a plan to define the potential for ITS
applications available to address the needs of the region. The ITS planning
process is much like any other transportation planning activity, with the focus
on technological solutions as described below.
Study Components
Using the federal ITS planning process as a guideline, the overall approach to the
Tahoe Gateway Counties ITS SDP includes the following tasks:
- Define and inventory existing and planned transportation system and current and planned
technology uses
- Define existing and future transportation-related deficiencies and opportunities
- Identify user service objectives and ITS vision
- Establish performance criteria
- Develop ITS market package plan and develop a regional architecture
- Identify and screen technology options
- Develop SDP and outreach materials.
Players
The participation of the Tahoe Gateway Counties ITS planning stakeholders is key to the
success of the planning process. The Placer County Transportation Planning Agency
(PCTPA) serves as the project manager, which includes
project oversight and administrative responsibilities. Planning partners working
with PCTPA include
other Tahoe Gateway Counties representatives including
Sierra County, the
Nevada County Transportation Commission (NCTC),
and the El Dorado County Transportation
Commission (EDCTC), in cooperation with Caltrans,
Tahoe Regional Planning Agency,
Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG),
various transit
agencies, USDA Forest Service,
California Highway Patrol, state communications,
AMTRAK,
National Weather Service,
Nevada Department of Transportation,
California Division of
Tourism, and several cities within the Tahoe Gateway Counties.
